Dehumidifiers - Servicing
About Dehumidifiers
A dehumidifier is a household appliance that reduces and controls the level of humidity in the air. It operates by drawing in moist air, removing excess water, and then releasing drier air back into the space. This is particularly useful in humid climates, as high humidity can cause health issues and property damage.
Common features
- Adjustable humidistat: Allows you to set a desired humidity level (typically 30–50%) and the machine will automatically turn on and off to maintain it.
- Auto-shutoff: Turns the unit off when the water tank is full to prevent overflows.
- Continuous drainage: Allows you to attach a hose for hands-free, continuous drainage into a floor drain.
- Portable design: Most units have caster wheels or handles for easy mobility between rooms.
- Built-in air purification: Some models include HEPA filters or ionizers to also clean the air of airborne particles and germs.
- Low-temperature operation: Found on units designed for cold spaces like basements, this feature prevents the coils from freezing.
- Improved Air Quality: Reduces allergens such as Mold spores and dust mites.
- Prevention of Mold & Mildew: Inhibits growth on surfaces, protecting health and property.
- Enhanced Comfort: Eliminates sticky, clammy feelings by keeping humidity at optimal levels.
- Protection of Belongings: Safeguards furniture, documents, electronics, and other items from moisture damage.
Odor Reduction: Prevents the musty smells associated with high humidity.
What we can do Servicing & Maintenance
Clean the water bucket
- Turn off and unplug the unit for safety.
- Empty any standing water.
- Wash the tank with warm, soapy water and a sponge or soft brush.
- To disinfect, use a solution of one part white vinegar to four parts water. Swish the solution around the tank, let it sit for a few minutes, then rinse it out and dry it completely.
Clean or replace the air filter
- Unplug the unit and remove the air filter, which is typically on the back or side.
- If you have a reusable filter, use a vacuum brush attachment to remove loose dust and debris. If it’s heavily soiled, wash it with warm, soapy water. Allow it to air dry completely before reinserting.
- If your unit has a disposable filter (like a HEPA or carbon filter), you must replace it every six months or as recommended by the manufacturer.
Clean the coils and grills
- With the unit unplugged, use a soft-bristle brush or vacuum cleaner brush attachment to gently remove dust from the evaporator coils and grilles.
- For a deeper clean, you can use a damp cloth with mild soap and water on the coils, taking care to avoid bending the delicate fins.
- Wipe down the outer casing and air vents with a soft, damp cloth.
Check the drainage system
- If you use a continuous drain hose, inspect it for clogs, kinks, or mineral buildup.
- Clear any obstructions using a flexible brush or by flushing the hose with a vinegar solution.
- Ensure the hose is properly connected and sloped downward to prevent leaks.
